Lest We Forget 2008

October 20, 2016

We are so sick and tired of hearing how bad the economy is (it isn’t), how weak our military is (it’s larger and better equipped than the next 37 nations combined), how slow the growth of the GNP has been ( it’s growing all the time), the jobs problem (lowest unemployment in years and years), how the terrorists are winning (we got Osama Bin Laden and are seeing real progress against ISIS in Mosul), and how terrible Obamacare is (millions of people are now covered for health care who weren’t and couldn’t be before) that it’s a wonder we are still standing upright. So please, just stop the nonsense, okay?

Have the Republicans forgotten that as George W. Bush left office in 2008 he handed over to Barack Obama the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression? Have they forgotten that Mitch McConnell said, “My job is to make sure that Barack Obama is a one term president,”? This president was saddled with the most obstructionist Congress since Lincoln took office. The Tea Party Republicans made it their mission to see to it that anything Obama wanted to enact, even if it had been one of their very own ideas, went down in flames. They shut down the government over Planned Parenthood, for Heaven’s sake! And yet, he kept at it. We now have Marriage Equality, very low unemployment, and his stimulus package saved the auto industry and the economy. The Ship of State was headed over the falls, but against huge odds he turned it around at the last minute and saved us. So please, just stop the whining, okay?

Give the man credit. Barack Obama saved this country, and he did it in a hostile environment as Birthers like Donald Trump accused him of being a Kenyan. He kept at it with intelligence, persistence, and quiet dignity. He and his beautiful family made us proud to be Americans. Can you imagine any other person capable of doing this, plus bringing home all of our troops from Iraq in the process, a decision that had been signed into law by Bush, leaving him little choice but to clean up yet another Republican mess? So please, just stop the lying, okay? We have been the most fortunate nation on earth, and Barack Obama is a big reason why. He saved us from going over those falls, and we should humbly thank him and praise him for the rest of our lives. Amen.
