There are all sorts of surveys right now among Catholics world-wide concerning what the faithful should be looking for in the next Pope. How about a woman? How about someone who cares about the emotional and physical well-being of children enough to send pedophile priests to court and possibly jail terms? What about someone who could intelligently differentiate between homosexualtiy and pederasty, teaching tolerance and acceptance for the former and zero tolerance for the latter? Wouldn’t that be a refreshing change? As for doctrine, I don’t think it matters much. Humans are terrified of the inevitability of death, and as long as a church promotes the promise of a glorious resurrection and life after death there will be plenty of takers. Let’s look to the social conscience of the living, shall we? How many paintings and golden chalices and silken vestments would it take to end world hunger or eradicate malaria? The next Pope might do well to open the vaults and follow the teachings of Christ by serving the sick and the poor.
